2022 Mercedes-Benz S500 4Matic Long AMG Line: Opulence Like Never Before

Forget the fabled Autobahn; if you want to understand the new S-Class, you gotta take it to Edsa, preferably on a weekday, in the afternoon and on a payday where everyone is stuck in traffic. The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class can show you all its tricks while you wait in traffic.

The latest S-Class brings that now-familiar opulence, with fat banks of glossy wood, ambient lighting (in 64 selectable colors) fit for a hip Berlin hotel as well as dramatic metal vents and speaker grilles. Throne-like chairs offer myriad adjustments and optional pillowed headrests. Newly robust massage functions bring some of the strongest magic fingers in the industry, now with 10 separate programs.

Not only is the Benz authentically spacious, it has a bunch of tricks to feel even more so. The 3-D instrument panel, which defies description in print but is utterly convincing and even a little vertigo-inducing in navigation mode, sits next to a massive more-than-Tesla-style center touchscreen with plenty of air behind both. The yacht-like sweep of the beveled wooden dashboard is designed to increase the perception of space at shoulder height.

There was a time when the S-Class set the style for the whole industry to follow, by contrast, this car seems like a pastiche of other peoples’ ideas. Not that it matters. If you have an S-Class, other people will eventually figure out that you have one. They will be jealous, and rightly so, because on Manila roads, the S-Class turns heads, and people give way just to see who is riding in the back.

The clear design of the new Mercedes-Benz S-Class focuses on what matters: perfect exterior proportions and contemporary luxury inside. The pioneering innovations of the new S-Class thus give it a unique and irresistible presence.

Modern luxury and first-class comfort reach a new level in the new S-Class. It is the ideal haven for anyone for whom driving a car will always be about much more than simply transportation. Innovative comfort-oriented features create a superior driving experience from the driver's seat to the rear. This is the place to be. And you needn’t pay much attention to your surroundings, because the S-Class will faithfully take you all the way down the road with no intervention other than the gentle, occasional reassurance of your touch on the steering wheel.

In a world where the wealthy increasingly insist on the same vehicular elevation, the S-Class amounts to little more than a love letter to the firm’s most devoted and particular customers. This is no cause for concern; rather, we should appreciate the fact that it exists at all. Mercedes-Benz set out to restore the S-Class' place amongst the greatest sedans in the world.

But, It is hard to imagine an existing S-Class owner not being thrilled with the new model. The potentates and billionaires will want the Mercedes-Maybach variant, complete with extra wheelbase, yacht-club interior, and two-tone paint. It’s the one to have in Dubai or Moscow — but here on the streets of our archipelago, the S500 4Matic Long will reign supreme, and rightly so. The best new car in the world? We reckon it's highly likely. Mission accomplished, Mercedes.
