The 2021 Toyota Fortuner has been revealed in the last month, showing a fresh face, better economy, and increased performance. But like the rest of the Toyota range, the updated Fortuner is also getting a price rise. Pricing for the Standard Fortuner starts at 1,494,000 THB and goes all the way up to 1,524,000 THB. Converted into Philippine pesos it estimates to approximately PHP2,363,000 for the entry-level model and tops out at PHP2,410,000 for the top variant. The “Legender” of the SUV, starts at 1,564,00 THB and goes all the way up to 1,839,000 THB. Converted to Philippine currency you are looking at a starting price of PHP2,474,000. For the Top-Spec version of the Legender expect it to be at around the PHP2,900,000 mark.

For the extra money, buyers will be getting an extra 20kW of power and 50Nm of torque over the last Fortuner, with the 2.8-litre turbo diesel producing a maximum of 150kW/450Nm. Toyota says that extra performance is thanks to a new water-cooled, ball-bearing turbocharger, along with some additional engine developments. An Aisin six-speed automatic transmission sends power to the part-time four-wheel-drive system, with low-range and a rear differential lock providing extra traction when off-road.

Based on the official combined fuel consumption figure of 7.6-litres per 100 kilometres, the Fortuner can theoretically travel more than 1000km on a single 80L tank of diesel. Suspension refinements have increased the Fortuner's braked towing capacity by 300 kilograms to a maximum of 3100kg.

Toyota says the upgraded Fortuner is now easier to park thanks to a new steering system that increases the power assistance at low speeds, but reduces the level of assistance at highway speed – providing a more direct steering feel for drivers.

New front parking sensors now join rear parking sensors as standard equipment.

The Fortuner also benefits from Advanced Toyota Safety Sense tech, which includes pedestrians and cyclists detection (the latter in daylight only), pre-collision warning, lane alert with steering assist, and high-speed radar cruise control.

The 2021 Fortuner uses the higher-end 2.8-litre turbodiesel engine producing 201 horsepower (150 kilowatts) and 369 pound-feet (500 Newton-meters) of torque with the help of the Electronic Control Unit (ECU). The fuel economy, however, won’t be affected, as per claims by Toyota. This engine up-gradation, although will produce more power, won’t consume as much fuel. In fact, it’ll save 17 per cent fuel while travelling within the city thanks to improved cooling.

The interior of both the vehicles looks the same but Legender comes with additional features:

  • 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system

  • 11-speaker JBL sound system including subwoofer

  • Wireless charger

  • Ambient light

  • Android Auto

  • Apple CarPlay

  • Advanced safety system “Toyota Safety Sense”

  • Cruise control

  • Paddle shift

  • 2-tone seats

  • EC mirror

  • Panoramic view mirror

  • Kick activated back door

  • Optitron meter

The arrival of the new Toyota Fortuner will hopefully boost sales in a segment the Japanese car maker usually dominates.

Toyota is the market leader when it comes to heavy duty off-road vehicles, as everyone can see Fortuners everywhere today, Toyota made another winner. Hoewever, There is no official word from Toyota Philippines if it will be bringing in the facelifted Fortuner anytime soon, so we’ll just have to wait and see.
