2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer Premiere: Size Doesn’t Always Matter

The Trailblazer may have a tiny footprint, but the designers went out of their way to give it some attitude. The Trailblazer is offered exclusively with a three-cylinder engine. If that wasn't unusual enough, the displacement difference between the basic and upgrade engine is just 0.1 liter—going from 1.2 liters to a burly 1.3 liters. There's no replacement for displacement, after all.

Exterior:

The Chevy Trailblazer has a definite presence, disguising its dimensions in the opposite way to the usual approach by appearing bigger than a typical subcompact SUV. With the wide grille, creases on the hood, and skinny LED headlamps, I think there's a little Camaro DNA present as well.

The floating roof concept has become de rigueur for SUVs and crossovers, but it's well executed here, and when viewed in profile, the black cladding on the side skirts provides a nice bit of symmetry. A pair of character lines - one just below the beltline and another just above the side skirts - run along the side of the Trailblazer, and along with the pointed shape of the taillights the C-pillar, help give the sheet metal some visual pop. The five-spoke, two-tone wheels also gave the Trailblazer some performance flare, though I'd be nervous to take them too far off the beaten path.

Interior:

Despite its small overall size, there's plenty of room inside the Trailblazer. Overall material quality skewed toward the entry-level tier, with lots of hard plastic, though the designers did a good job of reflecting the sharp lines of the exterior inside the cabin. It also felt well-insulated, as it proved relatively quiet, even at highway speeds.

Chevy's infotainment system is exceptionally well done, and features large, easy-to-read fonts, intuitive organization, and physical controls for climate controls, radio volume, and heated seats. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on all trims.

Engine and Performance:

For the Philippine Market, we get a 1.3L turbo 3-cylinder engine with 155 hp and 236 Nm of torque. With a New-Generation Lightweight CVT with Multi-Mode Drive System. Around town at slower speeds, the Trailblazer feels peppier than its test results suggest, but merging onto the highway or executing high-speed passing maneuvers require planning.

While the Trailblazer doesn't offer a particularly athletic chassis, it handles curves ably enough—but its ride is often harsh over road imperfections. The steering ratio is quick and nimble, but the vehicle feels more top-heavy than it should while navigating corners. As for the ride, it's on the firm side and slightly choppy, likely because of the relatively short 103.9-inch wheelbase.

Space and Practicality:

The Trailblazer offers 25.3 cubic feet of cargo space in its hold and 54.4 cubes with the rear backrest folded. These figures put the Chevy right behind the Honda HR-V, though only by a smidge.

Rear-seat passengers should be reasonably happy in this Chevy.

Despite the vehicle's dimensions, its back bench offers more than enough room for those who are long of leg or torso. The seat is firm and nicely elevated, though the bottom cushion is angled downward toward the front, which prevents it from supporting your thighs.

Safety:

The All-New 2022 Chevy Trailblazer is equipped with a host of multiple advanced passive and active safety features so you and your passengers can enjoy worry-free road trips at all times. Among other items, this suite of driver aids includes responsive automatic high beams, lane-keeping assist and lane departure warning, a following distance indicator and automatic emergency braking.

Verdict:

At the end of my week with the Trailblazer, I came away with an appreciation for this subcompact crossover. Because while it doesn't have a ton of power, its stylish looks, tiny footprint, and roomy interior make it a tool to navigate the urban jungle.

So overall, the fun-to-drive, spacious, attractive 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer offers an excellent value for its price. Its powertrain can handle highway or city driving, provides good high-speed stability and excellent cornering agility and the CVT provides good fuel economy. The all-new Trailblazer is an elegant, stylish interior, easy-to-use technology, comfortable seating for 5 and some off-road flair, it’s an affordable compact crossover you are sure to love.
