2022 Nissan Terra VL 4x4: Practical, Authentic and Designed To Go Anywhere

The Nissan Terra takes its slogan, #GoAnywhere, to heart, with its undercarriage consisting of a full-length, fully boxed ladder frame, double-wishbone front suspension, and multi-link rear suspension. All these combine to give the Terra more strength, and ultimately, more capability on extreme terrains.

This face-lifted model features a reshaped LED headlight cluster, a more aggressive bumper, and a new bonnet with chiseled features that blend into the deeper grille.

There’s also new front fenders which incorporate fake vents behind the wheel arches. Other changes include new alloy wheel designs, LED tail-lights, a revised rear bumper, and an arch-style chrome bar on the tailgate.

Exterior:

Nissan designed the Terra based on the Navarra and you could spot many similarities between them. However, the Terra has it’s own personal flares to make it an independent model. The Terra shows off it’s muscular ruggedness with a robust ‘V’- motion grille with chromed vertical slats that makes the Terra look like it’s big brother the Patrol. The side profile still remains the same but the new Terra now rides on 18-inch alloy wheels, which is standard on all variants.

The overall exterior image of the SUV is strong and impressive, but adds a level of refinement. The new Terra is developed according to Nissan's 'unbreakable' chassis design philosophy, combining durability with sleek and modern styling.

The C-shaped quad LED headlight, evolved and interpreted in a new way with four quad LEDs on each side, increases brightness by up to 34%. The same can be said about the tail-lamps. Not only does it attract your attention, it makes the Terra look edgy and sporty.

Interior:

The new Nissan Terra also features a stylish and spacious interior designed for the comfort of all occupants. Seats are more comfortable, with upgrades in seat cushion and back shape. The space between the passenger compartment and the rear luggage is fully adjustable through its special design allowing the second and third rows of seats to be reconfigured into various configurations.

These include theater-style seats, which use auto seats that can be folded automatically by pressing the one-touch fold and flip remote switch on the center console.

Keeping everyone entertained is easy in the new Terra. The new updated infotainment screen is the 9-inch system that runs a second generation of the Nissan Connect operating system. The graphics are sharp, crisp, and gorgeous.

It also comes with wireless Apple CarPlay–a Terra exclusive, and wired Android Auto. Because of this, iPhone users will happily enjoy the new wireless charging pad.

The best-in-class surround sound system from Bose Premium Audio, features eight specially designed speakers and amplifier. It is also the only SUV in its class equipped with front and side acoustic glass, reducing outside noise while delivering the highest quality sound on any journey.

Rear passengers can enjoy a world of online entertainment via the 11-inch screen with HDMI or Smart TV stick connectivity. All occupants can also simultaneously charge multiple devices with five USB ports (Type A and C) located in the front and center console, second and third rows.

Engine and Performance:

Having been named “The Best Acceleration Performance in Class”, the 2.5-liter twin-turbo dieselengine gives 190HP and 450 Nm of torque, for the best acceleration performance in its class. Plus 7-speed automatic transmission ensuring a smooth yet powerful drive.

Being based on the Navarra, which is a tall car, and the body sits on top of a frame. This usually makes for unstable car that bounces a lot. Nissan redesigned the Terra’s suspension to make it lower. The result is quiet and comfortable SUV that does not wobble at the sight of potholes.

Nissan also gave some thoughts regarding the NVH and prepared for it. The Terra uses acoustic glass to reduce wind sound from the outside and three layers of insulation to absorb the sound of the engine. These make the interior a tranquil place to be.

Safety and Technology:

The new Terra also provides advanced protection with its state-of-art ‘360 Degree Safety Shield’. Every trip starts with confidence and peace of mind, enabled by technologically advanced safety features. Intelligent Emergency Braking system determines if there is a risk of colliding with a vehicle in front, and will alert the driver and apply light braking. If the driver does not decelerate and collision risk increases, the system will apply automatic emergency braking immediately.

Added security offered with Intelligent Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Warning, Intelligent Around View Monitor (equipped with Moving Object Detection) and Rear Cross Traffic Alert. Intelligent Driver Alertness serves as another layer of precaution, especially helpful during long distance journeys.

Best in the segment, Intelligent Rear View Mirror displays images from a camera mounted on the rear of the vehicle and provides unobstructed view of the area behind the car. It allows the driver the ability to switch between the LCD monitor and the standard rearview mirror, depending on the driver’s preference. Although I personally like to leave it in the normal mirror setting as it can get distracting when driving at night.

Verdict:

Having spent days driving the Terra on and off-road, all I can say is that it really isn’t hard to love the Terra. Taking it to La Union and just having a blast with all the tech available, it was never a dull moment. What I don’t like about it is the seats. Yes they are comfy and looks amazing with that new design but it doesn’t give that much support so you’re left wiggling about on corners.

Despite its origin from a pick-up truck, the Nissan Terra is anything but crude. It remains the Navara’s off-road abilities but also gains comfort that would suit the city roads. It has all the needed safety features and extra Intelligence that surpasses its competitor. Overall, it is not only practical but also, comfortable and powerful.
