MG Philippines has unveiled a zippy little sedan that, like its mechanical siblings, will set you back rather less than you might expect.

With the arrival of a new sedan it has christened the GT, MG has continued its assault on the low-priced segment of the auto industry. It's not the first car in history to be referred to by that nickname, but it's a word that hasn't typically been used to anything that doesn't fairly rip along with passion and verve. MG refers to the car as a "rebellious sports sedan," so it isn't downplaying the newcomer's potential.

Also, the automaker claims that it was influenced by the iconic MGB sports-car, which ought to make some customers who enjoy classic motoring salivate a little.

Exterior:

At first glance, I was immediately impressed by the GT's cutting-edge, shark-hunting front end. With its downward-pressing hood and sleek LED headlamps mounted on either side of the "Digital Flame Grille," this coupé-like, four-door, fastback car appears to be begging to be let loose on the asphalt. This was a request that I would be pleased to satisfy shortly.

The MG GT was carefully engineered with aerodynamics in mind. This reality is made clear by the flowing body lines that extend the entire length of the well-balanced exterior; this characteristic serves to give this sedan the appearance of a fastback. Additionally, the car's athletic capabilities was heightened by the striking presence it gives off.

The attractive exterior's broad stance is most noticeable at the rear, where the GT Turbo's athleticism is further emphasized by its slightly cocked-up ducktail and 3D LED racetrack taillamps.

Interior:

From a shark-hunting exterior to a fighter jet-styled interior, the MG GT exudes plenty of power in its personality. You are graciously greeted with ergonomic bucket seats that were created to offer the best comfort and support, and we had the ideal vantage point from which to see the internal configuration and the road ahead.

The two-tone interior's attractive design is greatly enhanced by soft padding materials and a dashboard with a piano-theme. Glossy gear knob and high-grade aluminum highlights show off the cockpit's fighter jet-like quality.

The MG GT's back seating though hasn't been equally thoroughly thought out, yes it provides a high level of comfort for up to three passengers. A large sunroof that floods the interior of the car with light contributes to the cabin's sensation of space. However, you don’t get a center arm rest and cup holders which is annoying.

Tech and Safety:

One of my favourite features of the all-new MG GT is the efficient and user-friendly infotainment system, accessed through a 10-inch, high-definition touchscreen. This impressive setup provides instant access to all audio and communication features, including smartphone connectivity with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

An advanced Air Purifying Management System filters out any and all pollen and dust, resulting in only the freshest and cleanest of air circulating throughout the cabin. This is a fantastic feature to have in both sandy regions and traffic congestion.

The experienced craftsmen at MG have kept the safety of you and your loved ones at the forefront of the GT’s design, including an array of driver assistance and safety features in the car’s setup. A high-density steel cage body featuring laser brazing technology is a prominent physical component, designed to keep all occupants safe in the event of a collision. Side chest airbags and ISOFIX anchor points are additional standard safety features.

An electronic stability control system has been included to maximise traction, whilst an MG Pilot Intelligent Driving Assistance System warns the driver of any potential danger and intervenes when necessary. Further advanced safety and assistance features include a PDC rear reversing radar, a 360-degree view monitoring system, a Forward Collision Warning System, a Lane Departure Warning System, cruise control and an electric parking brake, amongst others.

Engine and Performance:

The all-new MG GT is equipped with a highly efficient, fourcylinder, 1.5-litre engine. Coupled with an 8-Speed CVT gearbox, this capable compact car delivers 111HP and 150Nm of torque. The Turbo version has 173HP and 250 Nm of Torque with a DCT transmission and enables the GT to accelerate from 0-100km/h in a respectable 8 seconds and to achieve a top speed of 215km/h.

Featuring an XDS curve dynamic control system combined with an aerospace aluminium sports chassis, the MG GT has exceptional handling stability, even around tighter bends. The high-performance abilities of the GT are complemented by its proficient braking system, ensuring the driver always feels in complete control of the vehicle. Even in Alpha form, the GT seems to like it’s engined tickled. Though not a very quick car, it still is quite fun to drive.

Verdict:

There is something quite special about the 2023 MG GT that puts a smile on your face every time you see it and get behind the wheel. One thing is for sure, this MG vehicle is designed to please and certainly lives up to its reputation of being a "Rebellious Sports Sedan".

The quickest web search will turn up a plethora of vehicles with comparable features but at least a 50% price increase. And if we're talking about sedans made by reputable companies with models that teeter on the edge of what may be called the luxury end of the spectrum, that number could easily double or triple.

And with that, the all-new MG GT is an absolute winner in my book. It has all the right lines, the killer looks, very fuel-efficient, the way it rides is just fantastic and of-course the occasional glances people give you because this car oozes with sex-appeal. All that and an inexpensive price-tag? F*#^ING SENSATIONAL!
